Places to Visit Agra

Agra has the most excellent examples of Mughal architectural elegance which was a blend of Indian and Islamic styles. The Mughals ruled this fortified city for over 200 years, and their efficient courts transformed it into a man-made paradise. It houses 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the most well-known being the Taj Mahal.

World Heritage Sites

Taj Mahal

The first thing that you would like to do when you visit Agra is go straight to the Taj Mahal. This antique was established by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his dearest wife Arjumand Bano Begum, popular as Mumtaz Mahal. Actually it is an indication of eternal love of a man for his wife. There are twenty eight distinct types of rare, precious, and semi precious stones were used in the inlay work embellishing this tomb. The white marble structure of Taj Mahal fascinates everyone with its excellent architecture, beautiful carving and designs.

Agra Fort

This red sandstone marvel fort is also popularly known as Red Fort. Spread over an area of 2.5 km, the fort includes two gates named as Delhi gate and Amar Singh gate. Shahjahan spent the last few years of his life in prison at this fort. The fort was made up of 500 Akbari buildings, out of which only a few have survived including The Jahangiri Mahal, Khaas Mahal, Moti Masjid, Sheesh Mahal, Diwan-I-Khas, Anguri Bagh and Diwan-I-Aam etc.

Fatehpur Sikri

This fascinating city is also popular as the Ghost city. This city was constructed by Emperor Akbar as a tribute to the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti who predicted the birth of his son

The exquisite gateways and magnificent palaces, built-in red sandstone is the eye-catching wonders of the city. Buland Darwaza is the gateway to the city, which is an architectural wonder. The important monuments and structures inside the fortified city include Jama Masjid, Buland Darwaza, Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Tomb of Salim Chisti, Panch Mahal and many more grand structures make Fatehpur Sikri a truly remarkable place.

Historical sites

Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah

The tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daula is a splendid piece of architectural work which captivate the heart of its visitors. Ghiyas Beg the chief minister or the father-in-law of Emperor Jahangir was bestowed with the title of Itimad-ud-Daulah, means the pillar of the state. This tomb is completely made up of marble during Jahangir’s period.

Akbar’s Tomb

Akbar’s Tomb lies in the middle of the huge garden and also known as Sikandra. It was Akbar himself who initiated the works himself but it was finished by his son, Jahangir. It is a combination of Hindu and Muslim architectures in a superlative region. Four red sandstone’s gates direct to the tomb complex: one is Muslim, one Hindu, one Christian and one is Akbar’s patent mixture.

Jodha Bai ka Rauza

This place is built by Jodha Bai herself. Jodha Bai was the hindu girl and the favourate queen of the Muslim Emperor Akbar. The most sticking architectural feature of this place is the fusion of Hindu and Muslim traditions.

Places of worship

Bageshwarnath temple

Bageshwarnath temple is one of the most holy places in Agra dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is also serve as the landmark for the area.

Mankameshwar Temple

It is one of the oldest temples of Agra city, dedicated to Hindu Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga inside the temple is covered with a silver metal. It is believed that, during the Dwapara era the Shiva Linga was founded by Lord Shiva himself.

Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid was built by Shah Jahan. It is situated in front of Agra Fort. This monument has the most dazzling interiors which leave the visitors captivated.

Moti Masjid

Moti Masjid was constructed by Shah Jahan. The main purpose of this construction was, for the worship for his court members. It is proudly known as the pearl white and the great example of the artwork and beauty.

Gardens

Ram Bagh

This garden was laid out in the year 1528 by the Mughal Emperor Babur and this is the oldest Mughal garden. Perched on the bank of river Yamuna, the garden is designed in such a way that the wind coming from Yamuna keeps the place cool even in summers.

Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh or moonlight garden is situated north of Taj Mahal and the opposite of the Yamuna River. It was the last garden of the eleven built by the Mughals which was constructed by Mughal emperor Babur. It becomes partially flooded by the rain during rainy season.

Shoping

Shopping is a big pleasure for everyone in Agra. In Agra you can find every kind of market according to the taste of the buyers. From large sized markets to small sized local shops and from shopping malls to street shops, one can find everything here.

Here one can buy variety of items like marble handicrafts, carpets, rugs, gold threads, and leather and embroidery pieces. The main shopping centers are near the Taj Mahal complex that includes Sadar Bazaar, Kinari Bazaar and Munro Road.

Cuisine

Agra city is the most ideal destination for the food lovers. Agra is known for its lip smacking mughlai cookery items. Agra’s Peetha, a tempting sweet and Dalmoth, a tasty salty snack is very popular in allover India.

A food festival is also celebrated in Agra during Taj Mahotsav.

Taj Mahotsav

Organized by Uttar Pradesh Tourism dept, Taj Festival is dedicated to the promotion of India’s extensive arts, folk music, classical dances, different cultures and crafts. Taj Mahotsav is a 10 days long celebration which will start from 18th Feb and last till 27th Feb, 2011.
